Florida defensive coordinator George Edwards leaves for Buffalo Bills
One day after putting together the nation’s best signing class – which included three of the top defensive players in the nation -- the University of Florida is looking for a new defensive coordinator.
George Edwards, who was hired less than a month ago from the Miami Dolphins, has taken a job as the defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills. The Bills announced the hiring Thursday afternoon.
Edwards has spent the past 12 seasons in the NFL, including the last five with the Miami Dolphins as a linebackers coach. He also coached linebackers in Cleveland in 2004 and spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons in Washington. He was the Redskins’ defensive coordinator in ’03.
Edwards coached linebackers with the Dallas Cowboys from 1998-2001.
The last time Edwards worked on the collegiate level was 1997, when he coached the defensive line at Georgia. While there he worked with eventual first-round NFL Draft picks Richard Seymour and Marcus Stroud.
Edwards also worked as an assistant coach at Duke (1996) and Appalachian State (1992-95). He played at Duke under former UF coach Steve Spurrier.
