Buffalo Bills Mock Draft

Round 1 (9) Rolando McClain LB Alabama Height: 6030 Weight: 255

The Bills will likely be aggressive to try to move up for a QB. Clausen may be out of reach, but there is a chance Bradford slips to within target range. Finding a QB in this draft is critical for the Bills. A franchise without an established franchise QB or one in development is simply a lost franchise. However, if the Bills miss out on Bradford or Clausen, they can not afford to waste the pick on any of the next tier group of QB. There are simply too many questions for prospects like Tebow, McCloy or Pike. My mock is really a worst case scenario in that I am projecting that the two big QB (Clausen and Bradford) as well as the top 3 OTs (Okung, Davis and Campbell) are all off the board.  If any of those 6 are on the board, they would be the pick over McClain, as gifted as he is. However, if they are all off the board, the Bills would do well to take him. The other considerations would all be on the defensive side of the ball as DE Derrick Morgan and NT Dan Williams will be seriously considered. While linebacker is not the Bills biggest need, finding a bigger linebacker to help improve teh leagues worst run defense is certainly one of them. McClain is a rare prospect with off the charts recognition skills and leadership abilities. He was the defensive leader of the nations best defense and was arguably the national champions most valuable player. He is a text book tackling machine and can deliver the bone jarring hit. His exceptional recognition skills make him valuable against the pass as well. He has the losse hips and enough speed and athletic ability to stay with athletic TE's in the seem. McClain probably could make the move outside to the SAM, where he may project at first with the Bills. Eventually he could make the switch to the middle, which would shift POZ outside. He also would give the Bills the ability to switch or implement 3-4 packages. POZ and McClain would give the Bills two solid inside backers if they go that route, Kawika Mitchell would project to the strong side and Aaron Maybin would be the rush LB along with Schobel.

Round 2 (41) Tim Tebow
QB Florida Height : 6030 Weight: 238

Tim Tebow may be one of the most intriguing draft prospect in the history of the draft. His legendary leadership ability and intangibles stand in stark contrast to his mechanical deficiencies. As a pure QB prospect, this is too high to draft him, as a hybrid H-Back/Wildcat and with a ton of work future pro QB prospect he brings enough value to the table to be worth risking a second round pick. Also, from a marketing perspective, Tebow will certainly bring the media spotlight, fill the seats and sell plenty of jerseys. At the time of this posting, the Bills are a team without a leader in every sense of the word. While he may not possess the arm or football IQ to contribute behind center from day one, the Bills still need Tebow's leadership. I believe a team like the Bills can build around Tebow, you will need a solid defense, a power running game and a dominant offensive line. Creativity and patience is needed, but in a draft with poor depth at the QB position, given all of the extras Tebow brings to the table, he is worth the risk. There is little doubt he will work tirelessly until he leads his team to a championship. If Tebow is off the board, the Bills may be out of luck in this draft. I am not a believer of Tony Pike and the only other QB worth a look here in the 2nd would be Dan Lefevour. Jevan Snead would be a consideration in the 3rd round and Fordham QB John Skelton is a late round option that is raw and inaccurate but has some upside due to a rocket arm. A move up for Tebow is an option if the Bills are sold on him. he could be a good fit with Chan Gailey who is not afraid of mixing in spread formations and using players in unique ways. he was one of the architects of wildcat at the pro-level long before the Dolphins brought it back into vogue last season. Gailey could use Tebow in creative ways like he used Kordell "Slash" Stewart when he was with Pittsburgh. The beauty of Gailey and Tebow together is Gailey will use what Tebow does well to its fullest and not ask him to try to be something, namely a pure pocket passer, he is ill suited to ever become.

Round 3 (73)
Chris Scott OT Tennessee Height: 6040 Weight: 346

Scott is a versatile lineman capable of manning all 5 positions. He went over 700 snaps without allowing a sack this season in the always tough SEC. He has good size but he was a bit exposed against a strong Virginia Tech pass rush in their bowl game. He will play in the East-West Shrine game. He has the skill set Gailey covets in that he is capable of pulling and blocking in space and can be a dominant run blocker displaying a great punch and explosive burst of power.

Round 4 (9) Ekom Udofia NT Stanford Height: 6016 Weight: 326

Udofia was the anchor in the middle of Stanford's line. He has great size weighing in at the Shrine Game at a solid 326 , plays with a real mean streak and non stop motor. He fires off the ball, has a nice swim and spin move and remarkable agility for his size. Like most big guys his size he wears down quickly and needs to be spelled during the course of a game. He has great strength and can clog the middle against a double team. He is scheme diverse and can play the nose, 1 tech or 3 tech. Gailey has given clues that ultimately the Bills will switch to the 3-4 or some hybrid scheme. Udofia is a perfect fit in the middle and can instantly help improve the Bills run defense. Initially he will be a 2 down player as a run stuffing specialist, but eventually should develop into a 3 down player capable of collapsing the pocket against the pass to go along with his potentially dominant run stuffing ability. The strength and versatility he has may soon make him a key to the Bills defense.

Round 5 (9) Dennis Pitta
TE BYU Height: 6041 Weight: 245

Pitta has been one of my favorite college players to watch over the past couple of years. He can be a game changer in the passing game. He is a willing, but not a great blocker, but does an excellent job reading the defense and find soft spots. Gailey will use plenty of 2 TE sets with max protect and asks his receivers to be smart and adjust their routes to the coverage, those are Ptta's strengths. Given Tebow's chemistry with his TE AaronHernandez this year, it makes sense to add another weapon at TE to pair with Nelson. Nix loves big targets in the passing game and Pitta would be way too good value to pass up at this point in the draft. He could go as soon as the 3rd round, but given the depth at TE this year, either Pitta or another quality TE will be available at this point in the draft. Alabama's Colin Peek is another option if theuprefer a more traditional in-line blocking TE.

Round 6 (9) John Skelton QB Fordham Height:  6050 Weight: 244

Skelton is a small school raw prospect with prototypical size and perhaps the strongest arm in the draft. He would provide some insurance and give Gailey a pair of young QB to groom at the same time along with Tebow. Tebow could save a roster spot as a hybrid QB/H-Back so having an extra arm in camp and on the developmental roster makes sense. He would compete with Brohm to be the third QB on the roster with Tebow and  a veteran. Reports from the East West Shrine week practices are not surprising that he has an NFL arm but is wildly inaccurate and is struggling with footwork and technique.

Round 6 () Ryan Stamper LB Florida Height: Weight:

Stamper is a good edge pass rusher and would contribute on special teams. He has good size and speed and was a leader on Florida's defense. He was overshadowed by Spikes, but he stepped up when Spikes sat out.  He would be good value at the bottom of the draft.

Round 7 (9) Marcus Easley WR UConn Height: 6020 Weight: 216
The former walk on emerged as UConn go to receiver this year. He has a great size/speed ratio. He could rise once scouts see his combine workouts, but for now  he is a real sleeper.
Round 7(Simpson Trade)
Brandon Deaderick DE Alabama Height: 6040 Weight: 294

Classic 5 tech DE that helped anchor the nations best defense. You want some more toughness in Buffalo? Deadrick was shot in the arm during a robbery attempt on the Monday before an early season game this year and played on Saturday.
